Cherat Cement announces Rs1.85bn investment in BESS and solar plant

Cherat Cement Company Limited (CHCC) has announced plans to invest in renewable energy through the installation of a 25MW battery energy storage system (BESS) and a 5.4MW solar power plant at its Nowshera facility, aiming to manage rising electricity costs and expand clean energy usage.

The development was disclosed in a notice submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), stating that the company’s Board of Directors approved the project via circular resolution. Cherat Cement said the combined cost of the storage system and solar plant is estimated at Rs1.85 billion, and the project is expected to be completed within six months of commencement.

The company noted that the initiative will enhance its renewable energy capacity and help offset power expenses. In 2025, Cherat also commissioned a 6.065MW solar plant at the same site, expanding its green energy footprint.

Pakistan has seen a notable shift toward solar adoption in recent years amid high grid tariffs and improved access to photovoltaic systems. According to the Policy Research Institute for Equitable Development (PRIED), solar PV installations across the country have reached an estimated 33 gigawatts, driving major changes in energy consumption patterns and raising new considerations for the national grid.

More companies are increasingly adding solar to their industrial setups as a cost-effective alternative. Last month, Kohinoor Mills Limited added another 2.7MW to its renewable capacity, bringing its total on-site solar generation to 7.2MW.
