The Government of Pakistan borrowed an additional Rs77.96 billion during the week ended July 24, 2026, while maintaining a cumulative net debt retirement of Rs528.5 billion for the ongoing FY2027, according to the latest weekly estimates released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
Government borrowing is classified into three categories: budgetary support, commodity operations, and others. During the reporting week, budgetary support borrowing amounted to Rs67.64 billion, while commodity operations recorded borrowing of Rs10.93 billion. Meanwhile, Rs611 million was retired under the "others" category.
On a cumulative basis, the government has recorded a net retirement of Rs530.25 billion for budgetary support during FY2027. At the same time, commodity operations registered cumulative borrowing of Rs2.47 billion, while the others category showed a net retirement of Rs720 million.
The State Bank of Pakistan and scheduled banks remained the government's primary financing sources. During the current fiscal year, the government has borrowed a net Rs1.37 trillion from the SBP, including Rs750.14 billion by the federal government and Rs645.31 billion by provincial governments. Meanwhile, the governments of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) retired Rs15.4 billion and Rs7.67 billion, respectively.
In contrast, the government has retired a net Rs1.9 trillion to scheduled banks during FY2027. The entire repayment was made by the federal government, while provincial governments recorded no net borrowing or repayment from scheduled banks during the period.
