Pakistan has received its first-ever Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) shipment, with the M.V. Grande Shanghai arriving at Karachi Port carrying more than 2,000 electric vehicles (EVs), marking a major milestone for the country's maritime and logistics sectors.

The 220-metre RoRo vessel successfully berthed at the Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML), operating under the Karachi Port Trust (KPT), according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry described the vessel's arrival as a significant step forward for Pakistan's port infrastructure, saying it reflects the country's growing ability to handle specialised cargo in line with international standards.

The minister noted that the shipment followed his approval last month to facilitate the import of electric vehicles through RoRo operations during a meeting of the committee on maritime affairs.

He said the successful handling of the vessel demonstrates Pakistan's increasing integration into the global supply chain for clean mobility and sustainable transportation, while strengthening the country's logistics capabilities.

Unlike conventional cargo vessels, Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) ships are specifically designed to transport wheeled cargo, allowing vehicles to be driven directly on and off the ship. This method significantly reduces cargo handling time, improves operational efficiency, and enhances safety during loading and unloading.

According to the minister, the successful berthing of M.V. Grande Shanghai underscores the Karachi Port Trust's commitment to modernising port operations through advanced logistics and trade facilitation.

He reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen Pakistan's maritime sector, improve port efficiency, and enhance the country's connectivity with global shipping and trade networks.
