Gwadar Port has entered the international marine fuel market after Vitol Bunkers launched commercial bunkering services, marking a major step toward establishing the deep-sea port as a regional refuelling hub for global shipping.

The company has begun supplying high-sulphur fuel oil (HSFO), very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO), and low-sulphur marine gas oil (LSMGO) at Gwadar. The launch was marked by the port's first commercial bunkering operation, during which the LNG carrier Enugu received 2,500 metric tons of VLSFO.

The operation was carried out in collaboration with the National Logistics Corporation (NLC) using marine fuel produced by Cnergyico PK Limited, highlighting Pakistan's growing capability to meet international marine fuel standards.

Vitol expects to complete 20 to 30 bunker deliveries within the first 45 to 50 days of operations and has the capacity to supply up to 50,000 tons of marine fuel per month using two bunkering barges stationed at Gwadar.

Industry analysts believe Gwadar's emergence as a bunkering hub comes at a strategic time, as shipping companies seek alternative refuelling locations amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and potential disruptions to regional shipping routes.

With long-term supply agreements involving major global shipping companies, including MSC, QatarEnergy LNG, and CMA CGM, the initiative is expected to enhance Gwadar Port's regional significance, attract greater maritime traffic, and create new opportunities for Pakistan's blue economy.
