The government is finalizing a new policy framework aimed at promoting the local manufacturing of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), as Pakistan seeks to strengthen its clean energy ecosystem and reduce dependence on imported battery storage solutions.

Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari shared the update while addressing the Solar Storage Flexibility 2026 Conference in Islamabad, stating that the policy is being prepared by the Ministry of Industries and Production and is expected to be finalized soon.

The minister said the initiative is designed to encourage indigenous manufacturing by providing incentives to local producers while building Pakistan's capabilities in the design, integration, and production of battery energy storage systems.

He emphasized that Pakistan aims to develop domestic expertise instead of relying solely on imported technologies, adding that universities will play a key role in producing the skilled workforce required for servicing, maintaining, and eventually manufacturing advanced battery systems.

Highlighting recent progress in the power sector, Leghari said nearly 55% of Pakistan's electricity generation now comes from clean energy sources.

He added that the government has set an ambitious target to increase the share of clean energy to 90% by 2035, with battery storage expected to play a crucial role in improving grid flexibility, supporting renewable energy integration, and enhancing long-term energy security.
