Pakistan's Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), which tracks the weekly movement in prices of essential commodities, increased by 0.28% during the week ended August 6, 2026, according to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).
The weekly increase was mainly driven by higher prices of onions (10.14%), chicken (9.19%), pulse gram (2.43%), chilies powder (1.01%), mustard oil (0.99%), Tea Lipton (0.57%), wheat flour (0.52%), vegetable ghee (1kg) (0.37%), firewood (0.32%), and washing soap (0.08%).
On the other hand, prices of several essential items declined during the week, including tomatoes (6.82%), LPG (1.90%), diesel (1.66%), bananas (1.20%), petrol (0.63%), sugar (0.51%), plain bread (0.29%), and eggs and potatoes (0.09% each).
According to PBS, out of the 51 essential commodities included in the SPI basket, prices of 20 items (39.22%) increased, 9 items (17.65%) decreased, while 22 items (43.13%) remained unchanged during the week.
On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the SPI recorded an increase of 9.29%. The largest annual price increases were recorded in tomatoes (178.03%), onions (84.65%), wheat flour (80.02%), LPG (53.83%), diesel (34.44%), petrol (25.97%), gents sponge chappal (16.69%), chilies powder (16.37%), mutton (16.12%), bananas (15.11%), beef (13.81%), and plain bread (9.37%).
Meanwhile, annual declines were observed in the prices of potatoes (30.65%), pulse gram (17.86%), sugar (17.60%), chicken (15.65%), salt powder (14.09%), pulse masoor (13.02%), eggs (9.66%), and pulse moong (6.25%).
Across income groups, the weekly SPI increased by 0.43% for the lowest consumption quintile, followed by 0.41%, 0.36%, 0.34%, and 0.20% for the remaining quintiles. On an annual basis, inflation ranged between 8.79% and 9.87%, while the combined SPI recorded a 9.29% increase.
