Government extends investor deadlines for Fesco and Gepco privatisation process

The federal government has extended the deadlines for investors to submit Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the privatisation of two major electricity distribution companies—Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (Fesco) and Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco)—to facilitate greater investor participation.

According to the Privatisation Commission, the deadline for submitting EOIs for Fesco has been extended from July 7 to August 7, 2026, while the submission deadline for Gepco has been moved from August 6 to August 21, 2026. The deadline for Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) remains unchanged at September 7, 2026.

The commission stated that the extensions were granted following requests from prospective investors seeking additional time to conduct due diligence, evaluate the transactions, and complete the necessary documentation before submitting their bids.

The privatisation process for the three electricity distribution companies was formally launched on May 19, 2026, as part of the government's broader strategy to reform Pakistan's power sector, improve operational efficiency, attract private investment, and reduce the financial burden on the public sector.

Fesco, Gepco, and Iesco are considered among the best-performing distribution companies in Pakistan's power sector. Established after the restructuring of the former Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) in 1998, the three utilities collectively provide electricity to more than 14 million consumers across Punjab, the Islamabad Capital Territory, and parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The government expects that the extended timeline will encourage stronger investor participation and support a more competitive privatisation process as it continues efforts to modernize the country's electricity distribution network and improve service delivery.
