The Sindh government has approved the launch of an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service from September 2026, as part of its broader strategy to modernise public transport and promote environmentally friendly mobility across the province.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department, chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. The meeting was attended by Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, TransKarachi CEO Zubair Channa, Yellow Line Project Director Kamal Dayo, and other senior officials.

During the meeting, officials announced that 50 new double-decker buses are expected to arrive in Karachi in October, while an additional 1,000 electric buses will be inducted into the public transport fleet in phases by the end of the year.

The government also approved new Peoples Bus Service routes connecting Larkana to Qambar and Qambar to Shahdadkot, aiming to improve public transport connectivity in interior Sindh.

To help ease traffic congestion in Karachi, authorities confirmed that a portion of the mixed traffic lane on University Road will be opened to the public in September.

Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon directed officials to complete all depots under the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project within the stipulated timeline and instructed relevant departments to operationalise the newly approved bus routes without delay.

He said the introduction of the EV taxi service, alongside the expansion of the electric bus fleet, would provide citizens with modern, comfortable and environmentally sustainable transport options while supporting the province's transition towards cleaner urban mobility.
