Pakistan records highest-ever monthly workers' remittances of $4.3 billion in May 2026

Pakistan recorded its highest-ever monthly workers' remittance inflow in May 2026, with overseas Pakistanis sending $4.3 billion during the month, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

The record inflow represents a 20.2% increase compared to April 2026 and a 15.4% rise from the corresponding month last year, reflecting continued confidence among overseas Pakistanis and providing significant support to the country's external sector.

The SBP described the inflow as the largest monthly remittance figure ever recorded by Pakistan, highlighting the growing contribution of overseas workers to the economy.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the development, stating that the record inflows reflect the trust of overseas Pakistanis in the country's economic direction. He termed overseas Pakistanis a valuable national asset and acknowledged their continued role in supporting economic stability through rising remittance contributions.

Commenting on the achievement, Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad noted that remittances have maintained strong momentum throughout FY2025-26 and are on track to surpass $41 billion by the end of the fiscal year, which would mark another historic milestone for the country.

The strong performance comes at a crucial time for Pakistan's economy, as remittances continue to serve as a key source of foreign exchange inflows. These funds help finance the trade deficit, support foreign exchange reserves, strengthen the rupee, and sustain domestic consumption.

Remittances remain one of Pakistan's most important external financing sources, accounting for nearly 9-10% of GDP and contributing significantly to banking sector liquidity and foreign currency availability.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates continue to be the largest contributors to remittance inflows, collectively accounting for more than one-third of Pakistan's annual receipts. As a result, developments in the Gulf region remain closely linked to Pakistan's external sector outlook.

The record inflow provides additional support to the country's balance of payments position at a time when higher global oil prices and geopolitical uncertainties are increasing pressure on external accounts. Analysts believe sustained growth in remittances will remain critical for preserving macroeconomic stability and strengthening investor confidence.
