The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) concluded Wednesday’s trading session on a positive note as the benchmark KSE-100 Index closed at 188,380.38 points, posting a gain of 177.53 points, amid selective buying in oil & gas, banking, and cement stocks.
The market experienced intraday volatility, with the index moving within a range of 1,004.38 points. It touched an intraday high of 189,183.88 points, gaining as much as 981.03 points, before retreating to an intraday low of 188,179.50 points as selling pressure emerged in select heavyweight sectors.
Trading activity remained healthy, with 423.53 million shares exchanged within the KSE-100 Index. Market breadth stayed slightly negative as 42 index companies closed higher, 56 declined, while 2 remained unchanged, reflecting cautious investor positioning toward the close.
Among top performers, PIOC (+10.00%), KEL (+3.69%), PPL (+2.91%), SSGC (+2.60%), and GHGL (+2.40%) led gains, supported by strong buying interest and sector-specific optimism. Conversely, selling pressure was observed in ILP (-2.96%), GADT (-2.70%), LCI (-2.39%), HCAR (-2.29%), and TRG (-1.86%), which weighed on overall sentiment.
From an index-point contribution perspective, UBL (+263.80 points), PPL (+180.39 points), PIOC (+109.46 points), OGDC (+75.14 points), and POL (+60.58 points) emerged as the key drivers supporting the benchmark. On the downside, FFC (-296.31 points), MARI (-67.48 points), HUBC (-66.53 points), EFERT (-37.03 points), and SYS (-35.60 points) dragged the index lower.
Sector-wise analysis showed that the index was primarily supported by Oil & Gas Exploration Companies (+248.63 points), Commercial Banks (+237.59 points), Cement (+95.81 points), Investment Banks / Securities Companies (+27.04 points), and Oil & Gas Marketing Companies (+23.67 points). However, losses in Fertilizer (-325.23 points), Technology & Communication (-60.64 points), Power Generation & Distribution (-46.02 points), Textile Composite (-43.17 points), and Chemical (-22.76 points) capped upside momentum.
In the broader market, the All-Share Index closed at 112,632.57 points, gaining 209.35 points (+0.19%). Overall market volume increased to 953.92 million shares compared to 749.25 million shares in the previous session, while total traded value declined to Rs48.88 billion, down by Rs4.18 billion.
A total of 442,900 trades were recorded across 485 companies, with 182 closing higher, 253 lower, and 50 remaining unchanged, indicating mixed participation across the broader market.
On a cumulative basis, the market continues to demonstrate strong longer-term momentum. The KSE-100 Index has gained 62,753 points (49.95%) during the ongoing fiscal year, while it is up 14,326 points (8.23%) so far in the calendar year, underscoring sustained bullish undertones despite short-term volatility.
